Setting Yourself Up For Success

A Career Essentials Workshop with Rosemary Momanyi, June 2024.

Overview

We kicked off the year strong with a Career Essentials session on "Setting Yourself Up For Success in 2024" led by Rosemary Momanyi, Product Marketing Manager and Product Market Specialist for Africa at Google. In her session, she outlined four key guiding principles that can pave the way for a fulfilling and successful year. Let's delve deeper into each of these principles and explore how you can implement them in your own journey:

Be Well Prepared: So That You Are Ready When You Get The Opportunity

Opportunities often present themselves unexpectedly. The key to capitalizing on them is to be prepared. This means having a clear understanding of your strengths, weaknesses, and career aspirations. Take time to reflect on your past accomplishments and identify the skills you have honed along the way. Consider areas where you'd like to develop further and actively seek out learning opportunities to bridge those gaps. Regularly update your resume and online profiles, keeping them current and tailored to your target positions. By being proactive with your preparation, you'll project confidence and be ready to shine when that perfect opportunity arises.

Building on the core principles of preparation, vision, learning, and support, here's how to take your success strategy in 2024 to the next level:

  • Future-Proof Your Skills: Identify emerging trends in your field and proactively develop skills that will be in demand by taking online courses, attending workshops, or getting certifications to stay ahead of the curve.
  • Quantify Your Value: Don't just list responsibilities on your resume. Use data and metrics to showcase the impact you've made in previous roles.
  • Craft a Compelling Personal Brand: Develop a clear and concise message that communicates your expertise and value proposition. This can be used to enhance your online profiles, craft impactful interview introductions, and network strategically.

Have And Maintain A Vision Board: Activate The Power Of Visualization

There is a popular saying: "If you can't see it, you can't achieve it". Creating a vision board is a powerful way to translate your aspirations into a tangible roadmap. Dedicate some time to brainstorm your goals – both personal and professional. Arrange them on a board or digital canvas and place your vision board somewhere you'll see it daily. This constant visual reminder will serve as a powerful motivator and keep you focused on achieving your goals when you:

  • Get Specific: Your vision board shouldn't be a generic collage of inspirational quotes. Instead, personalize it with visuals that resonate with your specific goals. For a career advancement goal, include images of your dream job title or company logo.
  • Affirmations Matter: Weave positive affirmations into your vision board. These are short, powerful statements that declare your desired outcomes. Examples include "I am a confident leader" or "I achieve financial freedom by [year]."
  • Digital or Analog? Choose Your Style: Vision boards can be physical creations on a corkboard or digital collages on platforms like Pinterest. Choose the format that best suits your style and accessibility needs.

Never Get Tired Of Learning New Things: Embrace Lifelong Learning

The world is constantly evolving, and so should your skillset. Rosemary emphasizes the importance of never stopping the learning process. Learning not only equips you with valuable skills but also fosters a growth mindset, which is essential for navigating challenges and adapting to change. You can get started with:

  • Micro-Learning: Explore micro-learning opportunities like online tutorials, podcasts, or industry publications. Short bursts of focused learning can significantly enhance your skill set.
  • Develop Expertise: Pick a specific skill relevant to your career goals and dedicate yourself to mastering it. This could involve taking a specialized course, attending workshops, or joining online communities focused on that skill.
  • Learn from Failure: Mistakes are inevitable, but they can be valuable learning experiences. Reflect on past challenges and identify areas for improvement. Use those insights to approach future situations with a growth mindset.

Get A Mentor, A Sponsor, And A Coach

Surrounding yourself with the right people can significantly impact your success. Rosemary highlights the importance of having a well-rounded support system that includes mentors, sponsors, and coaches.

  • Mentors: Mentors are experienced individuals who can offer guidance and share valuable insights from their own careers. A mentor can be a sounding board for your ideas and provide honest feedback to help you navigate career decisions.
  • Coaches: Coaches take a different approach. They don't necessarily give you answers but rather ask thought-provoking questions that help you discover your own solutions.
  • Sponsors: Sponsors are champions who advocate for you within your organization or network. They can speak to your skills and accomplishments to decision-makers, potentially opening doors to new opportunities.

By incorporating these four guiding principles – preparedness, vision, continuous learning, and a community of mentor, sponsor and coach – you'll be well on your way to setting yourself up for success in 2024 and beyond! Remember, success is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the process, celebrate your achievements along the way, and keep striving to be the best version of yourself.
